Love Movies More Than Jesus?

What should you do if you know someone who seems to be more excited about movies than Jesus?

Many professing Christians give little evidence of valuing Jesus more than the latest movie they have seen. Or the latest clothing they bought. Or the latest app they downloaded. Or the latest game they watched. Something is amiss.

We are not God and cannot judge with certainty and precision what’s wrong. There is a glitch somewhere. Perhaps a blindness going in, a spiritual deadness at heart, or a blockage coming out. Or some combination. Christ doesn’t appear supremely valuable. Or isn’t felt as supremely valuable. Or can’t be spoken of as supremely valuable. Or some combination.

Here’s my suggestion. Instead of dampening their enthusiasm for movies, clothing, apps, and events, let that go as an expression of God-given personality. Instead, model expressive joy in Jesus. Over time, if there is no resonance from their heart with your joy, query them humbly:

I love your enthusiasm for the things you get excited about. You’re so free and expressive about good movies and nice clothes and cool apps. It seems odd to me that you don’t seem to be as expressive about the way you feel about Jesus and what he’s done for us. Have you thought about why that might be?

The point of this query is to help them see that the problem is not joyfully loving good created things. The problem is the apparent absence of similar affections for Christ.

If similar affections for Jesus are not possible, then the specter of idolatry becomes serious. But they may sense this themselves without your having to start with that indictment, if you draw their attention not to the excitement that’s there, but to what’s missing.

We don’t want them to lose their exuberance about anything good. We want Christ to be supreme in their hearts so that all their exuberance comes under him and for his sake. When Jesus is felt as supremely valuable in our hearts, all other values gradually become properly ordered and purified.

May the Lord give you great courage and wisdom as you help people awaken to the supreme value of Jesus.

Kenōsis is the Greek word in Philippians 2:7 translated "made nothing" (ESV). It's what Jesus did to himself — "he made himself nothing . . ."

In becoming incarnate God not only accomodates himself to human weakness:

He buries his glory under veil after veil so that it is impossible for flesh and blood to recognize him.

As he hangs on the cross, bleeding, battered, powerless and forsaken, the last thing he looks like is God. Indeed, he scarcely looks human.

He looks like nothing but a hell–bound, hell–deserving derelict. Everything about him says, “An atheist and a blasphemer!” . . .

We should notice, too, that the kenōsis involved the willingness to go ever lower.

Behind it, there lay two great decisions. The first, pre-temporal, was a decision of the eternal Son to assume the form of a servant in the likeness of men.

Second, taken once he was incarnate, was the decision to humble himself even further.

From this point of view, the humiliation of Christ was not a point, but a line.

Its greatest single step was that by which he became the child in the manger. The condescension involved in that is beyond imagining.

Yet it was only the beginning of the long downward journey through homelessness, poverty, exhaustion, shame and pain to Gethsemane; and beyond that to Calvary. . . .

Every moment in that journey from Bethlehem to Calvary was chosen; and every moment on the cross, from the third to the ninth hour, was chosen.

Every day of the Lord's life he re-enacted the kenōsis, renewing the decision which had made him nothing and choosing to move further and further into the shame and pain it involved.

He loved his own, and when eventually it became clear what that love would cost he went forward, trembling, to be what his people's sin deserved.

Who is God ?

It is far below God´s majesty to become anything like a dirty human - YES !

For, even in our most awestruck moments of life we don´t even come near of grasping the power and fearfulness of the Almighty. So why should He care ?

Yet, He DID become human.

What does this show us ? That we cannot apply any human standards on God.

Even on what *we think* He is supposed to be like. God has to REVEAL Himself to us, blind earthworms.

God is not like any of those selfish, ego-centred, power-greedy, arrogant, wicked, sinful human rulers, pashas, dictators, presidents or sheiks, or me - NO !

The Creator became human to reveal to us His true, holy - totally different and pure - character: God the Almighty is loving, gentle, quiet, humble, calling, courting, long-suffering, patiently waiting - and oh so powerful !

Once you caught a glimpse of His true nature in Jesus, you will surrender your all and everything to Him for eternity.

My part can only be to seek Him with all my heart and mind and soul and love Him with all I am - or lose Him for eternity.

Many people – even Christians – live only to please themselves ...

but unity comes through humility. Selfish ambition can ruin a church, but genuine humility can build it up. We are to have Christ’s attitude of love towards each other. As we grow in faith and come to know Him better, we will become more capable of maintaining an attitude of loving, spiritual unity with each other. Each branch (believer) living in union with the Vine (Christ) is united with all the other branches doing the same.

Faith in Christ transcends all human differences and makes all believers one in Christ. All believers are heirs to His kingdom and none of us are more privileged or superior to anyone else in God’s family. The ultimate purpose of the church’s unity is that with one heart and mouth, we would glorify God. We will strengthen our unity by focusing on Him instead of ourselves.

A parallelism exists between a believer’s physical body, which has parts with differing functions, and the community of believers in Christ as a spiritual body. The point is that each member functions to serve the body, not the body to serve the members. Just as the parts of our physical bodies function under the direction of our brains, so too each member of the church is to work together under the command and authority of Jesus Christ. All believers belong to Christ and our spiritual unity is to be manifest in the way we live.

Peter lists five key elements that bring unity to believers in the church: (1) “harmony” – pursuing the same goals (2) “sympathy” – being responsive to others’ needs (3) “love” – seeing and treating each other as brothers and sisters (4) “compassion” – being sensitive and caring (5) “humility” – seeing ourselves from God’s perspective and acting accordingly (Pt. 3:8-11).

One of the evidences of not drinking deeply from Jesus is the instability of constantly moving from one thing to the next, seeking to fill THE VOID.

You may be going through sexual partners, you may be going through friends, through jobs, you may be going through churches, just one after the other, you may be going through hobbies - internet stuff hobbies, games - you may be going through hairstyles, wardrobes, cars, locations, of where you live -

- because there is no deeply contented identity in Christ -deeply contented, deeply satisfied.

Your soul is a cavern of desire.

I offer myself to you, Jesus says, as water that lives. It becomes a well, it just satisfies day after day, you get up with hungers and longings and soul achings in the morning and come to me and find stability of contented identity.

And then you don´t move around so much, jumping here, jumping there. Crave, crave, crave, but nothing works.

That sounds static, doesn´t it ? Baloney, it isn´t static ! Believe me, it isn´t static.

There is a difference between a confident movement of Faith and craving movement of frustration ...

Ein paar Gedanken zur Vorherbestimmung - Ein Brief

Deine Frage wegen "Vorherbestimmung" war vielleicht der Grund, warum ich nicht vorschnell mit ein paar Zeilen antworten wollte... sie gehört nämlich zu den ganz schwierigen...

Gibt es so etwas wie Vorherbestimmung ? Bestimmt Gott alles vorher, was passiert ? Und wenn ja, was für einen Unterschied macht es, was ich mit meinem Leben anfange ? Ist alles nicht nur ein großes Theaterstück ?

Das sind schwerwiegende Fragen, wenn man an die Existenz Gottes glaubt.

Viele kluge Köpfe in der Kirchengeschichte haben sich schon viele schwierige Gedanken darüber gemacht und haben keine Formel gefunden, die alles einfach auflöst...

Aber keine Panik ! Ich glaube, vieles ist doch etwas einfacher, als wir denken, wenn wir viel darüber nachdenken...

Natürlich kann ich nicht in einem kurzen Brief alle Aspekte hinein nehmen. Aber die Alternative wäre es, endlose Bücher zu schreiben. Dazu fehlt mir schlicht und einfach die Zeit (oder vielleicht doch die Motivation), aber es gibt ja genug Leute, die das besser können, und endlose Bücherlisten auch.

Mir liegt die praktische Umsetzung in meinen Alltag und eine Beziehung voller Liebe und Vertrauen zu Gott durch Jesus am Herzen. Und ich denke, so wie ich Jesus kenne und Sein Wort, sieht er selbst das auch so.

Kompakte Kurzantwort: Gott erwartet meinen Einsatz auf ganzer Linie für mein und anderer Leute Leben, egal, was dabei herauskommt, aber in allem, ob ich es merke oder nicht, bin ich von Ihm abhängig, und die Oberkontrolle über alles behält Er.

Etwas ausführlicher hier also meine Meinung, nach viel viel viel Bibel studieren (d.h. suchen und blättern blättern blättern) und mit anderen reden, reden, reden, und lesen, lesen, lesen, und selber nachdenken: Wir haben hier ein Paradox ! Aha !

In der Bibel gibt es gleich eine ganze Menge davon (Paradoxa), und sie sind eigentlich nicht zu “lösen”, es sei denn, Gott zeigt uns evtl. die Lösung, in etwa wie bei einem Rätsel. Was läuft und ist doch starr ? Geht doch gar nicht ! - Doch ! Die Nase. Oder die Uhr. Jetzt als plattes Beispiel.

Bei Gott: Einer und doch drei. Jesus: Ganz Gott und doch ganz Mensch. Jesus: Leidendes Gotteslamm und Herr der Welt. Gekrönt als König aber doch an vielen Orten der Erde noch nicht sichtbar und erlebbar... uvm.

Als Mensch ist man in seinem Verstehen universaler Zusammenhänge doch leicht eingeschränkt. Rein schon vom Größenverhältnis her... Es hilft, das anzuerkennen.

Mit der Vorherbestimmung ist das so: Die Bibel sagt eindeutig, dass Gott alles weiß und "alles in sein Buch geschrieben hat, bevor noch ein Tag davon war".

Das ist auch nicht Vorherbestimmung, sondern Vorher-Wissen.

(Wenn du mal die ganzen Bibelstellen wissen willst - ein ander Mal ! Das sind nämlich ganz schön viele ! Ich gebe dir in meiner Antwort einfach eine Zusammenfassung vieler Bibelstellen.)

In der Bibel lesen wir aber auch, dass Gott uns auserwählt hat vor Grundlegung der Welt, und dass unser gutes Tun da nix groß beigetragen hat - sondern einfach nur darum, weil Er uns liebt !

Das spüren wir ja auch ganz deutlich, wenn wir vor Ihm sind im Gebet - wie Er uns liebt und beschenkt trotz unserer Macken und unseres Versagens !

Da steht beispielsweise auch, dass Er Könige einsetzt und absetzt und ihre Herzen lenkt wie Wasserbäche.

Da steht auch, dass wir ohne Seine aktive Hilfe gar nicht in der Lage sind, etwas Gutes hinzukriegen: Alles in unserem Leben Gelingende ist Sein Geschenk !

Und wenn Er uns nicht aktiv beschützt und zurückhält, fallen wir prompt von einem Bösen ins nächste.

Also Gott bestimmt schon ganz schön Vieles, und zwar nicht spontan, sondern - gut durchdacht - vorher ! Hm. Vorher-Bestimmung. Sieht wohl danach aus.

Aber hier wird´s schwieriger. Was ist denn mit denen, die böse sind ? Sind die gar nicht schuld, weil Gott sie ja nicht dazu bringt, gut zu sein ?

Genau diese Frage ist beklemmend: Ist das nicht vorherbestimmt, dass einige Menschen böse sind, und sind sie dann überhaupt für ihr Tun verantwortlich ? Und wie du schreibst: Wenn alles vorherbestimmt ist, was bringt denn dann mein Mühen ?

Ich halte das für völlig daneben !!!

Gott redet ganz deutlich von Entscheidung und Verantwortung und Sich-Bemühen und Um-eine-gute-Einstellung-Kämpfen usw. Also geht Gott davon aus, dass wir entscheiden können, und es macht bei Ihm einen Unterschied, was wir mit unserem Leben machen und wie wir es führen.

Gott ist an erster Stelle Liebe - und Liebe lässt Freiheit ! Da gibt es eindeutig eine Wahl und eine Freiheit !

Selbst wenn wir nicht im umfassenden Sinne frei sind - durch unsere sozialen Abhängigkeiten, durch Unwissen oder durch das Gewöhnen an Falsches. Und durch das, was die Bibel "Sünde" nennt: Gefangen sein in der Neigung zum Bösen. In der Trennung von Gott.

Doch stehen wir immer wieder vor Entscheidungen, und wir treffen sie, und sie bestimmen entscheidend über unser Leben.

Gott verhindert nicht alle schlechten Entscheidungen, manchmal aber schon. Manchmal spüren wir Seine Bewahrung, aber manchmal geht alles schief und Tragödien geschehen. Seine Absicht mit uns ist immer, uns für sich zurückzugewinnen. Gott spielt nicht mit uns - Er liebt ! Reiner und echter und tiefer, als wie wir das je erfahren können ! Liebe spielt nicht.

Gott ist an erster Stelle gnädig und wahnsinnig mitfühlend, er gibt jedem Menschen nicht nur die zweite Chance, sondern auch die hundertste und tausendste.

Wo würden wir sonst landen ohne seine so entschlossen vergebende Haltung uns gegenüber. Das kriegen wir nicht mal bruchstückhaft so hin.

Das sehen wir an Jesus. Wenn wir uns irgendwo Gedanken über Gott machen und dabei vergessen, Jesus ins Gesicht zu sehen - wie er zum Beispiel diesen unmöglichen Haufen von Jüngern um sich sammelt, Sündern die Hand reicht, Kaputte heilt, Zerbrochene aufrichtet, Hochansteckende liebevoll berührt, seine Feinde liebt und von allen verlassen und verraten unter unmenschlicher Folter freiwillig am Kreuz stirbt, nur um unser Herz zu gewinnen - dann gehen wir an der Wahrheit vorbei ! SO ist Gott und nicht anders !

Gott vergibt erstens, und zweitens hilft Er uns, wo wir Sachen nicht alleine schaffen !

(Nun... eigentlich hilft Gott bei allem, selbst wenn wir nicht dran denken...)

Man sollte nie dem Fehler verfallen, einzelne Bibelverse alleine stehen zu lassen - die Bibel ist nur in ihrer Ganzheit wahr !

Wenn wir einzelne Stellen nicht verstehen oder wenn wir an Gottes Güte zweifeln, dann tun wir am besten daran, in Gedanken zu Jesus zu gehen und Ihnanzusehen. Mal wieder in einem Evangelium lesen. Oder auch mal in den Psalmen blättern. Da kommt alles in die rechte Balance, das habe ich schon so oft persönlich erlebt.

Gerade, wenn mir das Böse in dieser Welt an die Nieren geht... Er weiß es und Er versteht es und Er hält die Auflösung des Rätsels in der Hand ! IHM vertraue ich ! Mehr Liebe, als Jesus am Kreuz für uns bewiesen hat, kann es nicht geben !

Was mein persönliches Leben betrifft: Ich bemühe mich mit ganzer Kraft und all meiner Liebe, so gut ich kann, Jesus hinterher zu laufen und zu tun, was er mir sagt. Das berührt mein eigenes und anderer Leute Leben.

Ich bitte Ihn um Seine ständige Hilfe und um Gelingen. Und dass ich ganz nah an Ihm dran bleibe, das ist mir das Allerwichtigste.

Wo mir was gelingt, danke ich Ihm und weiß: Das hätte ich nie alleine geschafft !

Wo ich versage, gebe ich das offen vor Ihm zu und vertraue, dass Er mir vergibt und mich immer noch genau so wie vorher unbeschreiblich lieb hat !

In allem ist Er derjenige, um den sich alles dreht, und ich freu mich so oder so wie ein Schneekönig, dass ich Ihn kennen lernen durfte und auf ewig Sein bin !

Naja, es gäbe noch viel mehr über das Thema zu sagen, beispielweise, dass man mal zu diesem Thema alle Bibelstellen auf einem Haufen gemeinsam betrachten sollte, bevor man komische Sachen von Gott denkt, aber ich hoffe, in der Essenz hat dir die Antwort etwas weitergeholfen...

God planned more for your life - dare to find out !

Jesus said to him: "Come and follow me! And immediately he got up and followed him."

This is not a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. It is a life-style.

Being a follower of Jesus means, staying close to Him.

Means keep talking to Him as we walk with Him through the day. Keep in touch with His focus, with His ideas, with His priorities.

Wanting His will.

How does that work ?

What many Christians keep forgetting - we need to have an open ear to what He is saying.

The disciples of Jesus were listening much more than talking to Him.

There can come an imbalance into our faith when praying, we convict ourselves of our own ways, and don´t care enough to listen.

Wanting Him follow us. Leading the way and expecting Him to quietly protect and bless whatever we feel guided to.

Be sure you keep in focus what He is saying. What He has said. What He did. How He lived.

You don´t have to wait long to make Him speak to you personally.

Just take the time, open your Bible, and start listening. Start watching. And start following.

Don´t waste your life.

Know Him. Love Him. Serve Him.

Day by day.

How can one believe in God when he allows so much suffering ?

Isn´t this the single biggest challenge to the Christian faith, when God is supposed to be a God of love, and a God of justice?

We live in a world full of war, cruelty, atrocities, hunger, sexual abuse of little children, greed, selfishness and broken hearts wherever you look around !

If God is good, then why does he allow evil ? If God is almighty, why doesn´t he make people behave ?

So, is he cruel, indifferent, impotent, or just non-existent ?

We know that there can not be true love where there is no free will and a choice. In view of the Creator, this includes the possibility to choose something else than the good God intended for man. And there will be consequences where choices are made.

Should God eliminate our free will in order to prevent evil ? Or should he only eliminate the effects of our bad choices ?

Both would turn out to be a chess game. God doesn´t play chess with us. No, he doesn´t. He is too serious about His free choice to love us, inspite of all our self-determined God-less ways.

But what, then, is this all about ? Suffering and evil is so meaningless !

WHERE IS GOD when there is immense pain ???

Reading the book, "The Case For Faith" by journalist Lee Strobel, I found this passage a key response - not answer ! - when you find suffering, pain and injustice overwhelming:

"I could never myself believe in God if it were not for the cross..."

"In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it ?

“I have entered many Buddhist temples in different Asian countries and stood respectfully before the statue of Buddha, his legs crossed, arms folded, eyes closed, the ghost of a smile playing round his mouth, a remote look on his face, detached from the agonies of the world.

"But each time after a while I have had to turn away. And in imagination I have turned instead to that lonely, twisted, tortured figure on the cross, nails through hands and feet, back lacerated, limbs wrenched, brow bleeding from thorn-pricks, mouth dry and intolerably thirsty, plunged in God-forsaken darkness. That is the God for me !

"God laid aside his immunity to pain.

“He entered our world of flesh and blood, tears and death. He suffered for us.
“Our sufferings become more manageable in light of His.

"There is still a question mark against human suffering, but over it we boldly stamp another mark, the cross which symbolizes divine suffering.

"The cross of Christ is God´s only self-justification in such a world as ours."

I find immense comfort in the hope that suffering, agony, sorrow and even tragic death is not the end of anybody´s story. God will end all war, injustice, tears and sorrow when he comes back to be the righteous King of this world.

All our questions will be answered then. All our suffering will be fully and more than enough compensated for. Every evil will be forgotten forever.

This world as it is right now is not the end of the story.

For now, God wants us to know: He is willing to do and to give everything to mend this broken world. In fact, He already did. He could not have given any more. And the immeasurable sacrifice of His own heartblood will not be in vain.

God will write the last chapter of history. And it will end even better than when it began.

This is a very realistic hope.

What other answer could you offer ? None. Or do you ?
